I am one year into Al-Anon and am so grateful! I can’t wait to give back, but I was told I need to have more time before I can be a part of the AMAIS training and support the area’s needs. I would also like to be a Group Representative. I am hoping to become more outgoing and speak aloud in front of others with an assertive, calm presence. I need to retrain my brain not to deflect, assume the worst, or pound my self-esteem down into the dirt.
For me, this would mean having my name on a speaker’s list; being available and willing to speak from the podium at Speaker Meetings, Al-Anon Days of Recovery, workshops, conventions, or AA Roundups that have Al-Anon participation. This is service beyond the group level. Why does this interest and appeal to me? There are a number of reasons, and I’m not sure all of them are healthy, but some of them are. Beyond service in my Al-Anon Family Group, I have become actively interested and engaged in serving within the Alateen. Initially, I was invited to consider joining a team of Al-Anon Members in Alateen Service (AMIAS) who rotate monthly to ensure that the Alateens in our District are supported with an adequate number of Alateen Group Sponsors. While the annual certification process is rigorous, it makes sense to have accountability for the teens’ safety, and I have been able to use my administrative skills to help streamline some processes.
