The 2022 World Service Conference approved changes to the “Public Outreach” section of the “Digest of Al‑Anon and Alateen Policies” related to social media. These changes are reflected in the 2022–2025 Al-Anon/Alateen Service Manual (P-24/27) v2.
Over the past several years, there have been many questions about how to use social media to conduct public outreach, including whether it is even permitted. One of the biggest challenges with social media is avoiding “double-headed management” across this vast global landscape. The updated policy on pages 127–128 of the Service Manual provides clearly defined roles for the following:
- World Service Office
- Areas, Districts, Al-Anon Information Services/Intergroups
- General Service Offices and national structures
- Groups
- Individual members
Participation can take place at every level of service. The updated policy provides guidance as to how our efforts can complement each other while spreading the message of hope to families and friends of alcoholics.
