It’s taken me a few weeks to think about this topic. My initial response was that I haven’t served on any committees. Today I remembered, yes I have! It was a small role, but like this program keeps teaching me, it still counts. I was a Group Representative (GR) and our district wa co-hosting one of the area assemblies. I volunteered to help work the registration table on the first day of the event. I was nervous, uncertain of what I was expected to do, and scared that somehow I’d mess things up. Fellow GRs greeted me with smiles when… Read more »
Serving at different levels of service over the years has been an important part of my recovery. When I came to Al-Anon, I was not here to stay. I was to stay only until my sober husband told me that I could go back to AA meetings with him, after I was finally minding my business. I was not impressed with Al-Anon and what it had to offer. However, God in His great wisdom knew how He could get my attention. This is how I have always seen it over the years. I was elected GR/DR only six months after coming… Read more »
I have been in Al-Anon for two years. I was asked to be the alternate group representative in my home group before the end of my first year, which is all online. I was nervous at first since I am so new to the program. But everyone is so nice and accepting it has not been bad. A few times I opened the meeting because the group rep. was gone. I also have attended online GR meetings and reported back to the group. This has been a positive experience for me.
I am a great follower!!! Do not like to be “in charge”, but when my DR volunteered our district to host the NYN assembly/convention I was terrified, but had a lot of great ideas, and no practical experience. The “guidelines” only confused me more! Even though I did not want to be in charge, I kept offering ideas, and finally she said, “why don’t you just do it?” Having been in Al-Anon for quite some time, I trusted that I would get the help I needed, and took a leap of faith. I found all my committee heads. I am… Read more »
I first came to Al-anon in 2018…. then in 2020 the pandemic hit and meetings were closed. The Virginia Area quickly stepped up to offer time slots on their business meeting Webex platform. There was such a demand that the area eventually expanded to 3 licenses to accommodate the AFG meetings, Area meetings and Virtual Assemblies! I volunteered to help the Tech Team with Webex training and conducting the virtual and now hybrid assemblies. I learned so much. I realized that a service position is never done in isolation. We support each other. I was able to learn and understand… Read more »
Concept 4: Participation is the key to harmony Concept 5: The Rights of Petition and Appeal protect minorities and assure that they be heard. I grew up in an alcoholic home. One night, my brother took me along to pick up my mother from a dangerous situation. He asked her if she would like to get some beer and she agreed. I was 10 years old so and said “I don’t think that’s a good idea”. My brother and mother said I was too young to understand and it would be alright. I know I would not have changed the… Read more »
I moved to New Jersey in January 2020, and but returned to my California home group online meetings during the pandemic. I remained isolated from members in NJ for several months, until I volunteered for the NJ Al-Anon convention committee. I contributed my professional experience and collaborated with a new group of people. They were relieved to have an enthusiastic new volunteer, even though they had never met me in person! As a result of working with the convention committee for months, I got to know members from across my new state. I was elected to serve as convention chair… Read more »
