Can a young man ask for help?

Welcome to First Steps to Al-Anon Recovery from Al-Anon Family Groups. This is a series of podcasts to discuss some common concerns for people who have been affected by someone else’s drinking.

Today we have Miguel with us. Miguel is an Al-Anon member who used to be in Alateen.

I am married to a functioning alcoholic. We have been fighting and going in circles with his disease for 15 yrs. I have 3 kids with him and they are getting older and I’m not sure how much longer I can sheild them from this.

When he is having his “dry” period, he’s the man I love, a great dad, a loving husband, my best friend. Then he “relapses” and I’m so disappointed again and I can hardly look at him and he always lies to me and says he hasn’t drunk, but of course I know he has and it makes me angry and he ends up crying, and then I feel bad and the cycle starts again.

I don’t know what to do anymore. He has gone to AA and then stops. I have gone to Al-Anon and it does help me not feel crazy. I don’t know how much more I can take and I don’t want my kids to have to know this about their dad.

I am an Alateen Sponsor. I loved hearing how Alateen has helped Miguel, and very
blessed to be a part of Al-Anon. Welcoming newcomers keeps them coming back and
trust gets easier. I will let the Alateens know that there is a podcast they can
relate to. Hoping more from Alateens will be available soon.

Hi, again. I relistened to Miguel and I must say listening the second time round to your message brought an inner thought. I hope to have bookmarks printed with the Al-Anon.org Web address so others can listen as well, on their own time. For Professionals and students.

It is a great 12 Step call. Thanks to all for preparing these podcasts.

Wow, what a wonderful tool. This is the 1st podcast I have heard and I am quite happy with what I heard. Miguel was quite forthcoming with his story of Alateen and Al-Anon and what it has done in his life. To be able to change the outcome of our life with just a few simple tools as the Steps, Traditions, Concepts, slogans and sponsorship. Thank you for the privilege to hear this podcast.
