Volunteer Governance & Legal
The Volunteer Governance team serves as the link between the World Service Office (WSO) Staff and the Al‑Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc. Volunteers (Board of Trustees and Executive Committee). The Executive Director leads the team, working closely with Staff and Volunteers to shape the WSO’s strategic vision and initiatives. The team is responsible for supporting quarterly Board Weeks and monthly Executive and Finance Committee meetings, as well as recruiting and nominating Volunteers.
The Legal team is responsible for the protection of Al‑Anon’s copyrights and trademarks worldwide. These legal protections are jeopardized when Conference Approved Literature (CAL) is posted online (e.g., on social media platforms) or portions of CAL are photocopied for distribution to members and newcomers. To achieve global compliance, the team works with service structures in countries outside the World Service Conference Structure (the US [including Puerto Rico], Bermuda, and Canada) to register Al‑Anon’s copyrights and trademarks in each country. Likewise, in collaboration with the International Coordination Committee, permissions are granted to service structures for the translation of CAL into the language of each country, thereby protecting the Al‑Anon copyright. Without this country‑by‑country process, our Al‑Anon name, copyrights, and trademarks would be at risk.
